Course Roadmap - How to Listen to Jazz
Before the Workshops
✔ Download the PDF guide for each session.
✔ Set aside 15–20 minutes to do the pre-workshop listening (a short playlist of tunes we’ll cover).
✔ Write down 1–2 questions or curiosities you have about jazz — we’ll use them in the workshops.
Workshop Week
Day 1 – Friday, Jan 23 @ 9am PST
- Workshop 1: Instruments & Roles

- After the session: Review the PDF and replay, then spend 10 minutes listening to a recording and identifying the instruments.
Day 2 – Saturday, Jan 24 @ 9am PST
- Workshop 2: Form
- Focus: Recognizing structure (AABA, blues, rhythm changes) and following the form in real time.
- After the session: Use the reflection questions in the PDF while listening to one of the examples again.
Day 3 – Sunday, Jan 25 @ 9am PST
- Workshop 3: Improvisation
- Focus: What to listen for in a solo, how players interact, and how storytelling works in jazz improvisation.
- After the session: Try listening to a track and describing the “story arc” of the solo in your own words.
